Introduction

Both glasshouse whitefly and cotton whitefly can cause significant problems in tomato crops. The potential contribution of Amblyseius swirskii to combating whitefly in this crop has also been looked into. Most predatory mites come up against difficulties in establishing and distributing their populations within the tomato crop. Amongst other things, this is connected with the hair-covered surface and glandular hair excretions of the leaves. To date, however, the research into the possibilities offered by A. swirskii for tomatoes does not give much cause for hope.
